Help Us Assist One Million More Patients This GivingTuesday
Since 2012, GivingTuesday has inspired millions around the world to unleash the power of their generosity to help others. The concept resonates deeply with all of us here at Real World Health Care and the HealthWell Foundation.
This year, HealthWell is proud to celebrate a significant milestone: We have provided financial assistance to one million patients to help them afford critical, often lifesaving, medical treatments. Now, on this GivingTuesday, we’re asking our friends and supporters to help us assist one million more patients.
While one million may seem like an inconceivably large number, the financial assistance HealthWell provides to help patients afford life-changing medications and treatments isn’t abstract or faceless. It is very real, as we hear every day from grateful grant recipients whose lives were touched by a HealthWell grant.
Meet Carolyn
Carolyn W. received a Pulmonary Hypertension-Medicare Access grant from HealthWell. She says, “I have been a fortunate recipient of copay assistance grants from HealthWell several times now. Without this assistance, I would not be able to afford one of the two medications my doctors prescribed.”
“These two medications have stabilized my otherwise progressive, incurable disease to the point that I now do not need heart catheterization; in other words, the medications have helped keep my disease from progressing!”
“This is a huge relief, and I feel the difference and am thankful every day. The other thing I want to say is that HealthWell is BY FAR the most caring, accessible and personal foundation of all the assistance funds out there (and I have dealt with quite a few). I always feel like the representative I am speaking with really cares about me, is supportive, and helps me navigate the application process. I can’t thank HealthWell Foundation enough for giving me back my life, and I am confident that as long as I can afford my medications, I will continue to live a healthy life without the stress and anxiety of not being able to have my medications. Thank you HealthWell, from the bottom of my heart.”
Meet Roger
Roger C. received a Prostate Cancer-Medicare Access grant from HealthWell and says, “When I retired at age 61, my health was doing very well until I hit 69. I had not gone to my primary doctor for two years because of the Covid pandemic but when I did return in 2022, my PSA (prostate-specific antigen) was extremely high: 45. It should be zero to four.”
“My urologist gave me a prostate biopsy and I was sent to get an MRI, CT scan, bone scan and PET scan. The results all confirmed I had stage 4 prostate cancer. And if that wasn’t bad enough, my Gleason score was an eight, meaning that it was an aggressive cancer. The cancer had already metastasized to many bones and a few lymph nodes. My projected life remaining would be four to five years. This was a real shock to me.”
“My PSA level went up to 65 by the time I started my testosterone blocking treatments. My main source of income is only Social Security, and l could not afford the expensive injections. But thanks to the HealthWell Foundation and their generous donors, I was able to receive this care. After seven months of treatment, I went to have a bone scan and PET scan again to check on the treatment progress. Amazingly, except for two small areas, the cancer was completely gone from my bones, lymph nodes and even my prostate. My doctor said he has rarely seen this kind of recovery from stage 4 prostate cancer with my level of metastasis. However, I must continue taking the injection or else the whole thing could come back again.”
“I want to thank you again for my HealthWell grant as it has given me extra years to my life, and I am sure I wouldn’t be here writing this now if it weren’t for the compassionate people at HealthWell and their donors.”
You Can Change the Life of Someone in Need
Carolyn’s and Roger’s stories are truly inspirational, and the Foundation is thankful for their willingness to share so others may know they are not alone.
